In 1981, Rev. Louis B. Harrell, Sr. founded a store-front church in the heart of Central City, Living Witness Church of God in Christ. The area was in deep decline. Prostitution, drug dealing and violence were rampant and Rev. Harrell was inspired to do something abut it. In 1986 Living Witness began a community feeding program, followed shortly thereafter by emergency food distribution and then a clothing distribution program.

In 1989 the church established Living Witness Community Social Services and received 501(c)(3) designation the following year. Since then, LWCSS has added a long-term residential treatment and jobs program for homeless men who are substance abusers, a community technology center, and programs for children.

Our mission is to rebuild lives, to reunite families and to increase the capacity of individuals and families to become self-sufficient.
